Having been founded, incubated and successfully scaled up within Imperial College London, the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) will today become its own independent charity - SCI Foundation.
The SCI has adopted a One Health approach that goes beyond treatment of parasitic worms. Our approach aims to change population behaviour to reduce transmission between humans and animal populations.
Behavioural change interventions involve encouraging local populations at risk of infection to adopt a new set of practices.
We support governments to deliver treatment programmes against schistosomiasis using the drug Praziquantel, and work hard to ensure that as many people as possible receive treatment
In this blog we’ve outlined the top methods for reducing the spread of schistosomiasis.
The SCI continues to support a treatment programme in DRC, and fortunately, the outbreak did not start until just after the last round of treatment was distributed in the country. This means that the programme has so far not been affected.
