Tracking progress along the WHO Neglected Tropical Diseases Road Map to 2030: A guide to the Gap Assessment Tool (GAT) and results from the 2023-2024 assessment

The WHO Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) road map’s monitoring and evaluation framework combines quantitative indicators with qualitative assessment via the Gap Assessment Tool (GAT), providing insight into why progress is or isn’t happening and where research and programmatic gaps remain.

A standardised GAT methodology, informed by the road map’s paradigm shifts, was developed using online public consultations and focus group discussions. It generates a visual ‘heat map’ of progress, a status review for each NTD, and disease-specific and cross-cutting recommendations for action, information valuable to both national programmes and global stakeholders.

This manuscript summarises the GAT methodology and results from its 2023–2024 implementation, covering four priority dimensions identified in the 2019–2020 assessment: Diagnostics, Monitoring & Evaluation, Access & Logistics, and Advocacy & Funding. It presents current status by disease alongside consensus critical actions needed to accelerate progress toward NTD eradication, elimination and control targets, both globally and nationally.
